    In February 1978, Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty released a single called ‘Baker Street’ a direct reference to Baker Street in London, where he often stayed in a friend’s flat when travelling between his family home in Paisley and London. One of the most notable characteristics of the song is the haunting saxophone solo which was performed by Raphael Ravenscroft. Ravenscroft was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1954 and he studied music, having a great interest in the saxophone. He found that playing jazz classics didn’t satisfy him enough and instead chose to play Jimi Hendrix records, which is why his legendary solo in Baker Street resonated with so many people, as it shares similar characteristics with guitar.
