    Great Expectations is a novel composed by Charles Dickens, this novel is set in early Victorian England, a period when tremendous social changes were influencing the country. It is a story told in the first person narration by a moderately aged Pip, who is glancing back at his adolescence and youth. The story takes its starting when Pip is just 6 or 7 years of age and is living with his sister and her metal forger spouse Joe in light of the fact that his parents are dead. Great Expectations investigates the dangerous impact of money and class on the individual and the significance of affection, faithfulness and sensitivity in reestablishing humanity. It in this way follows the advancement of character as the advancement of a solid feeling of ethical quality. This essay will explore Pip’s obsession with gentility and class and the progressions to Pip's character through the span of the novel and the part of his portrayal in flagging his moral advancement. In the context of this novel gentility does not mean gentleness or kindness, it means becoming a gentlemen and upper class status. Pip’s obsession with gentility and class in Great Expectations is influenced and shaped by other characters, especially Estella.
