    The Outlaw Josey Wales, produced by Robert Daley and starring Clint Eastwood, portrays the life of Josey Wales as he runs from the notorious Union Captain Terrell and his horde of ruthless Redlegs and bounty hunters. Josey Wales’ exodus from Missouri is caused by his refusal to surrender to the Union. In the film, The Outlaw Josey Wales, shadows are used to illustrate the state of Josey Wales’ soul. The film begins in Missouri on the Wales family farm as Josey and his son plow the field. The act of plowing the field alludes to the connection and balance between Josey’s animus and anima. Josey is a farmer. He is grounded and knows who he is, thus, the sun illuminates Josey’s face, symbolizing the goodness and light in his soul. A farmer also serves “as the catalyst of the forces of regeneration and salvation, forces which join every beginning to every end, forging links which bind time together, as well as the successive seasons and renascent vegetation” (Cirlot 102). Although Josey’s face is illuminated, the sun is setting, which alludes to the death of his being a farmer and a father and the birth of his being an outlaw.
