The mood of the characters and the tensions seems to depend on the lightning conditions in the apartments, which are usually pretty bad, due to the presence of only one window. Therefore, it is remarkable that there aren’t more conflicts in the tiny apparent, when their cramped forced way of living is taking into account. The new spacious home in the white neighborhood, Clybourne Park, has in comparison to the old apartment, “a whole lot of sunlight.” This symbolizes life and hope, since nearly every form of life needs light and warmth for their existence. This is clearly linked with the considered abortion of Ruth. With the new apartment the family won’t have to go “backwards” by “killing babies” but can instead proudly go “forwards.” At the end of the play it becomes clear, that everyone including the critical Walter is in favor of moving to the new house, after he is forced to look into the eyes, of his son and realizes that this option is the best for his son, Travis, and his unborn child.
