People have converted novels into plays countless amounts of time. Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. Turning a novel into a play means challenges will be dealt with. Questions are asked and things will have to be changed to make everything fit. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende and David S. Craig adapted it. Regardless, of how well the adaptation is the characters, and the portrayal end up differently, but the resolution remains the same. One instance of the The Neverending Story creating differences between the novel and the play is the characters. The main characters in the story like Bastian, Atreyu, and Falkor remain the same in both the play and the story. On the other hand the Bookseller plays a bigger role in the novel than within the play. In the play, he only shows up at the beginning to tempt Bastian into taking the book. In the novel he shows up again at the end of it. Also, the novel gives more indication that the bookseller knows about Fantastica, while the play just has a narrator saying “The bookseller grins as he watches Bastain flee.” (play, pg. 9) While in the novel he and Bastian sit down and have a conversation…
Bastian was given the chance to go inward within Fantasien; however, Bastian must emerge out of the world to complete his journey. Only then he is capable of being a storyteller who brings out the change in both worlds. By emerging out of the gate that resembles the emblem of ouroboros, Bastain exits the “circle” and re-enters to the real world. He loses the Water of life that he brought to his father who has been searching for him since his disappearance. But Bastian realizes that his…
The Hero’s Journey story-line is used for almost all books, movies, and television shows. The 1984 fantasy spectacular named The NeverEnding Story, created by Michael Ende, follows this plot-line very well. Joseph Campbell’s “Monomyth” has many so called parts, this includes: Unusual birth/childhood, the call to adventure, crossing threshold, the challenges/trials, supernatural helper/mentor, special weapon, the abyss/temptation, the transformation, the return home, and the mastery of two worlds.…

The poems are similar in the way that they both focus on love throughout the text. The differences are the way they perceive love and the things they link to them. Each of the two have differents things they want to convey to the reader but they go along the same route as far as how they choose to write. Harry Potter phenomenon struck the world of children’s literature like a bolt with a similiar power of the lightning scar on his forehead. Magical story about the adventures of a young wizard who conquered all evil in the world mesmerized the hearts of kids all around the world. What is the secret behind the vigorous attraction of this witchraft series ? This question was my impulse to start to write my junior thesis. Two texts can seem so similar on the surface but could end up being quite different as you explore their depths. This is shown through the contrast in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Taylor Swift’s Love Story by the use of literary devices and their vastly different structures to express the theme of love. In Romeo and Juliet, imagery was used far more to convey the love that the protagonists felt for each other while in Taylor Swift’s Love Story, repetition was more commonly…
but over 40 years later it’s still quoted regularly. Harry Potter Okay, it isn’t one movie, however, it is one story and it’s a good one. J.K. Rowling created a book series that captured the imagination of kids across the world, and from that came the movies that even adults sat up and took notice of. It’s difficult to pick a favourite one, so your best bet is to make a weekend of it. The Wizard of Oz It really doesn’t matter how old you are, this classic is a must. You may have skated…
the inevitability of death. During Meursault’s encounters with mortality, the heat always seems to worsen. The hot Algerian sun additionally hinders Meursault’s internal state, which fogs his thoughts and inflicts pain on him. Throughout the story, the sun appears over and over, from the death of Maman to the murder of an innocent Arab on the beach, and in time at the courtroom. These events support the belief that the sun reflects life as well as…
I am an Indian-American, and my parents constantly ensure that I don’t forget the “Indian” part. My parents both migrated to America, eventually making their way to California where they met, and where I was born. Because they were raised back in Punjab, India, I grew up with neverending stories starting with “When I was your age, I had to …” in an effort to make me more appreciative of how much easier life is in America. My mom’s favorite line is “Why can’t you clean your room? When I was your…
