The Field School

Field Experience This year I started working with the youth at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Athens. I spend three hours with them every week; each week entails something different. A typical Sunday night looks like your average youth group or Sunday school setting. However, the youth takes many outside field trips and retreats throughout the year. The kids are middle and high school students, boys and girls between the ages of eleven and eighteen. Due to the fact that this learning environment is not definite in grading per say, I have been able to assess their growth by getting to know the kids. My field observations took place at Renaissance Charter School at Central Palm. I honestly had a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed my time there. Last semester, I was nervous about going to the elementary for field experience. This time I was excited because I had gotten the grade that I wanted kindergarten! I was the last to make it to my class because we dropped everybody off in order starting with 5th grade. Once I made it there I noticed how quiet and focused they were. During my field experience I got to observe a 4th grade classroom at Mason Intermediate School and an 8th grade class at Fairfield Middle School. Being able to observe this classrooms was good because I was able to see the differences between the grade levels and also the difference between a schools in an upper middle class community verses a school in a more urban setting. Every Monday and Wednesday, my afternoons are spent on the 900 block of West Union Blvd in West Bethlehem, PA. When I entered middle school, I struggled to relate to my peers. I left the ‘gifted’ program in fifth grade to experience a field trip only available for the mainstream group. When I returned to the program in sixth grade, things had changed. The other students didn’t exactly bully me--they didn’t throw me up against a locker and demand my lunch money. The Denmark- Hågerup IFR field school fills all of the requirements that I was looking for when I started looking for field school opportunities. I wanted to find something that was focused on osteology and the interpretation of human remains. This school is particularly interesting because of its timeline. Field Experience Journal 3 TAPR I decided for my first observation assignments and journals that I would attend Magnolia Elementary.
