Rather, it reinforces the idea that those who do not show consistency in their work do it with the intention of making it just another item for their resume. These students do not have dedication. Furthermore, psychologists argue that even if people seemingly perform good deeds out of the kindness of their hearts, "there must always be some benefit [to them]… even if we 're not aware of it" (Taylor). Genetically speaking, humans are wired to search for rewards. People want to make themselves look better than others, and they want to have the favor returned to them in the future. Often unconsciously the product of a search for rewards, people perform good deeds hoping for the favor returned or college admittance. Puritan works of literature affirm how people do good to escape the consequences of doing otherwise. William Bradford, in Of Plymouth Plantation, records when he and his fellow Puritans were confronted by an American Indian, they provided him with "friendly entertainment and some gifts" then "made a peace with him" (Bradford 72). Europeans and Indians didn 't get along, so logically Puritans showed benevolence towards Indians to reduce violence between the two groups.
