    When it comes to creating characters and story, Alexander-Tanner explained that his biggest incentive is real life situations and scenarios. “I like talking to people, a lot. Like getting really connected. Making comics is very solitary work which I don’t like”, Alexander-Tanner states. “I’m not a type of person who wants to just sit in a room and not interact with anyone for hundreds of hours. It just goes against my nature which has been a big struggle in this work. So I really like the parts when I’m talking with people or getting information”(Alexander-Tanner). He uses real people for his comics and bases the content and/or storyline around them. Sometimes this entails a made up storyline around the person, but most commonly Alexander-Tanner will create a work of nonfiction, occasionally a documentary in the form of comics. ”My best work is nonfiction work,” Says Alexander-Tanner, “I’m sort of accepting that I’m not as good at creating things as I am at interpreting and retelling things that are true or fact based”(Alexander-Tanner). Alexander-Tanner considers himself to be a very structured artist, one who has changed his approach to accommodate his work. As someone who doesn’t like clean up, Alexander-Tanner values planning within his pieces very much. “I really believe in drafting, you know, outlining and doing notes”(Alexander-Tanner).
