    A Marching Band Analysis

One of the generalities about the band is that we are ambitious towards reaching goals yet lackadaisical towards giving the necessary work. We hope to have a productive rehearsal, yet talk for most of its duration. People, thinking they are leaders, yell for everyone to “help the pit!” yet do not help them themselves. As a band, we expect others to accomplish our goals for us. We assume that someone else is going to play loud enough to cover for our own lack of sound. We assume that the effort around us somehow combines to something so great, our own effort is not needed. We assume that our director’s advice is for everyone else so that we do not have to take it. The reality, however, is quite the contrary. In a marching band, the cliché “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” manifests itself. In everything we do, we must wait on the last individual to be ready, who waits on everyone else. We assume that if we are not last, we are not slowing down the rehearsal when in reality, when you are not first, you are slowing down the rehearsal. When trying to achieve a form in the marching show, the image is only as clear as the worst group allows it to be; it only takes a few to ruin the whole. The individuals that put forth the least effort are slowly destroying the band while they believe that anything is enough. The result is that our goals are not reached. Though we know 100% effort is required from everyone, we assume our individual role does not require 100% of…

It is exciting to stand on something that no one else gets to. From the bridge we had a quality view of the pier on one side and the flats on the other. On the left were sailboats leaving and groups of people having picnics. On the right was a view of the tops of the short buildings of the flats. We stayed on this bridge for a long time. We talked and took pictures until one of the rapid trains stopped near us and did not continue going. By then we figured we had overstayed our welcome and…

The very mention of skeletons in the closet sends chills up our spine and immediately through our mind’s eyes, we see a pile of bones in a dark closet. However, that may not always be the case. Often times, the skeletons are a collection of memories and secrets, stored over the years in the secret compartments of our mind, and we alone have access to them. Many of these are wonderful, and enjoyable to share, which we do willingly. However, along with these are unpleasant, often painful memories…

Sometimes authors hide symbols and really make you hunt for them. That just happened to be the case with this one. There were various little hints, but it wasn’t a direct symbol. Each tape was numbered and labeled in blue nail polish, on the last day that Hannah saw clay/day of her life she was wearing the same blue nail polish. Clay had no idea that was the last time he'd see Hannah. She had already recorded and mailed the tapes. Hannah had already made her final decision, even if things went…
