    Derek is a 10 year old, third grade student, who will be entering the fourth grade next school year. Derek’s results from standardized test indicate that he has above average general intelligence and is reading on a second grade reading level. Derek is able to apply a phonetic decoding strategy when attempting to decode words. Derek writes with a cursive writing style, typical of students his age. According to recent achievement testing, Derek has a below average scores for word identification, word attack, and word comprehension. Derek struggles with identifying and blending beginning, middle, and ending sounds for words. Derek’s word attack skills are below average, resulting in Derek making incorrect substitutions for words and nonsense words. Additionally, Derek’s struggle with word attack and word decoding skills affect his progress with word comprehension, passage comprehension skills, and written language skills, which based on testing scores were below average for his age. It was noted that his scores did increased when items were able to be read aloud to him. Derek’s deficit in word attack and decoding skills also impact his written spelling skills, which were noted to be well below average on current assessment scores.
