Once your opponents have a skill level that includes making basic considerations about what sort of hand you might have, then you have the chance to start making some very advanced plays using what's referred to as second level thinking in poker. There are a number of common flop scenarios which illustrate second level thinking in action, and here we're going to look at how you can turn second level poker thinking into a very profitable tool on the early streets. So suppose you open-raise in middle position and a tight-aggressive player who is capable of thinking about what you hold calls on the button. The flop comes Ace-King-Four with no possible flush draws, but you only have pocket Threes. Your opponent's range mostly includes small to middle pocket pairs, middle suited connectors, and the occasional suited broadway hand. If you make a continuation bet here of about 60-70% of the pot and your opponent has a pocket pair that beats yours, like pocket Sevens for example, then your opponent's thought process is going to be something like this: "He (or she) raised pre-flop from middle position, which he would do with a lot of bigger broadways and almost any pocket pair.
