Ivins feels compelled to share her two cents on the matter, especially after George W. Bush's election. In Molly Ivin’s article, we can find numerous traces of word choice as well as their effects. For the most part, Ivins uses word choice to establish the mentality in Texas, often combining two words or purposely misspelling them to showcase ignorance and attitude in Texas. Ivins acknowledges the laziness in the way Texans talk through words such as “chrissake” and “Dubya,” in her writing. In addition, Ivins also uses word choice to better indicate the direction of the article. Negative introductions such like “Here in the National Laboratory of Bad Government,” for example, are used just before the article turns to political aspects of Texas, something Ivins clearly questions. Furthermore, the specific use of the word “Bad” sends out a powerful connotation to the reader, emphasizing the severity of Texan politics as neither great nor mediocre, but just plain bad. Through Ivins’s word choice, the reader is crudely informed on the author's disapproval of Texan politics as well as the topics for points to follow. By manipulating the way the reader perceives information, Ivins is able to raise awareness for the matter and create concern between the reader and Texas. As a result of word choice comes tone. The tone in the article is chiefly used to express disapproval of Texas. Before diving in too deep into the article, the tone is made loud and clear. In the first paragraph,…

William Blakley, U.S. Senator *** When I first arrived in Thailand, I entered the country without a visa, staying for 30 days and then paying immigration to extend my stay for another 15 days. Once the fifteen-day extension expired, I left the country to start the process all over again. The majority of the time, I took a bus to the border, crossed into Cambodia, and then turned right back around and re-entered Thailand. After…

In order for a team to join, the current owners have to take a vote on adding the team. If the team would pass the vote, they would then have to pay a fee to join the NFL. As I stated earlier, the last team to join, the Texans, had to pay $700 million to join the NFL (HoustonTexans.com). I personally think that the close league system is the best system for the NFL. Even though an open league system would push teams to be more competitive with the fear of relegation, the talent would be too…

In comparing the Texan and American Revolutionary Wars, they were each heavily impacted by their respective governments, Mexico and Great Britain. Both revolutionary wars were influenced by the governments’ careless and brutal actions, and the rebels won both wars. If Mexico and Great Britain cared for their citizens’ pleas for change, they would still be running their empires in America and Texas. There were many similar and different reasons why Texas and the 13 Colonies were lost by their…

Second, Mexican judicial system goes against ours. For…

North and South, each side fighting for what they believe in. Since the North did not want slavery and the South did, they began arguing about either to have slaves or not. Six states in the southern part of the U.S. seceded and formed “The Confederacy,” against the North. Later, Texas became the seventh state to join the Confederacy. Then began the Civil War. Why did Texans fight in the Civil War? Texans fought in the South because, for state’s rights, protecting slavery, and for their love and…
