Today I attended a rehearsal event at East Los Angeles College. This particular event was a piano rehearsal by Andree Ann Deschenes and took place in the S2 recital hall on October 13 and lasted about one hour. She performed and discussed piano music by Darius Milhaud “Sausages do Brasil, op.67”, Ignacio Cervantes “Danzas Cubanas”, and Ernesto Lecuona “Andalucia Suite”. The orchestra was centered on the stage with warm lights on. The conductor’s stand was centered in the middle with violins and cellos surrounding him. The participants listened to their choice of Indian Classical instrument or Indo Jazz music. Task 1 represents listening to music; Task 2 corresponds to listening to selected music and performing visual Go and No-go trials (task stimuli); and Task 3 represents performing the task in silence. Pop songs today are laid out in similar ways: verse, chorus, verse 2, chorus, verse 3, chorus. Because of their repetition, choruses usually make up what we see as the “core” of a song. When one thinks of “Rude” by Magic, do they think of the chorus or the verses? What about “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire? We generally think of songs like these as having a “normal” song structure.
