With large populations of immigrants coming to the United States to work on the railroads and in manufacturing jobs, labor became an important component in the production and building process. In order to keep track of labor, including where people resided, how many hours they worked and how much they earned, new tabulation tools were created in order to make it efficient to process a high volume of data for each person. In 1890, Herman Hollerith, a U.S. engineer was credited with creating one of the first computers, a “tabulating machine to save census workers the daily drudgery of computing data by hand and to reduce the time needed to compile census results” (Arnesen, “Computers”). Heinrich’s company, called “Hollerith’s Tabulating Machine Company” (TMC) would merge with several other companies to become CTR, which stood for “Computing-Tabulating and Recording,” which later became the precursor to IBM, the leading global computer and technology services company. With the development of the computer punch card, early computer systems became the method to not only calculate information, but create systems of standardized industrial production and automation. The punch card system utilized to keep track of workers was used in ways that also influenced American society in the home.
