You’ll notice that in the second part of the first verse, Lynyrd Skynyrd takes a direct shot at the Canadian musician – “Well I heard mister Young sing about her [Alabama]. Well, I heard ole Neil put her [Alabama] down. Well, I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern man don't need him around anyhow”. Those who identify as white southerners have been largely labeled as uneducated, racist, closed-minded, and stricken with poverty. Much of this is attributed to the generalization of southerners from the post-Civil War era: the belief that every white southerner must have the exact same morals, beliefs, and background, especially with the feeling towards different races. The intense public criticism has proved to ignite an explosive response from white southerners. I think that feeling by Skynyrd is displayed in the verse shown above. The lyrics of "Sweet Home Alabama" do take Young to task for bashing the entire South as racist in his songs "Southern Man" and "Alabama”. Feeling like Neil Young was ragging on the South as a whole, the first verse of the song reinforces that theory that white southerners resent the generalization of racism in the South, thus the rise of southern defiant pride is higher than ever…
leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” This statement gives light to a higher meaning of the word “home” than merely a place to live. Many people look at home as a place or a dwelling, but not many people see home as a state of mind; however, home is a state of mind. The Architizer defines home as a complex, interpretational, and unique way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world around us is constructed (Linda Bennett, "Architizer").…

The movies Sweet Home Alabama and Just Like Heaven have further in common than just the leading lady, Reese Witherspoon. These two movies represent the romantic ideals of society in appropriately similar ways. Both movies teach valuable lessons in telling how Hollywood chooses to portray what the concept of love is and how it develops in romantic films. In Sweet Home Alabama the first concept of love is the chemistry between the two characters. Right off the bat, the chemistry between the two…
at an Atlanta club called Funocchio's in 1972. Kooper produced the group's 1973 debut, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, which was recorded after former Strawberry Alarm Clock guitarist Ed King joined the band. The group became notorious for their triple-guitar attack, which was showcased on "Free Bird," a tribute to the recently deceased Duane Allman. "Free Bird" earned Lynyrd Skynyrd their first national exposure and it became one of the staples of album rock radio, still receiving airplay…

I decided to watch and analyze the movie Sweet Home Alabama. The movie is focused on the life of one particular character, Melanie Carmichael (actually Melanie Smooter). Melanie grew up in a small town in Alabama; her family was like many of the other families there: country and part of the working, middle to lower class. She married a man when she was younger, but after they split, she moved to New York where she made a new life for herself and met her now fiancé, Andrew. The major conflict…
Within in the realm of Southern Belles and Southern womanhood lies a complex relationship, the one between mothers and daughters. While the difficulty of the mother-daughter dynamic is not exclusive to the South, the rules of Southern Bell-like behavior creates added drama and expectations as two generations of women struggle with the social etiquette of their time, and their hopes for the future. Three movies that capture this bond and all that it implies are Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya…
