    tell me after he was finished. My feet would dig into the old leather clad cushions as I kneaded the dough around. The sticky mixture clinging more and more to as my small hands. I would rub them together and watched the dough curl up and fall off. Dad would add more flour. This was a repeated cycle. While I played with the dough, dad would be peel the potatoes and add more flour when needed. By the time the dough was ready the potatoes were already in the pot boiling. Dad would give it one final mix just to make sure everything was incorporated then place a wet bath towel over it to let it rise. He would stir the gumbo pot, check the potatoes, and put on a pot of rice for my brother before sitting on the living room floor and put on Super Mario 3 on the NES. I would sit on his lap and we would switch turns every time one of us died. The spices in the gumbo would waft around the room drawing my attention away from the game when my stomach would start growling. My father would laugh a big belly laugh and say something about “how there was a monster in there.” I would laugh just continue with the game. He would let me stay in the living room while he would check on everything. If it was ready he would call me to the kitchen when it was time to mash the eggs. I would pull my chair back and climb up the side. My dad would place the potatoes and the pealed eggs in front of me. “Mash the eggs and the potatoes around it but leave some potato chucks.” He would tell me. While I…
