Throughout Islamic history, Sunnism and Shiism have constituted the central doctrinal tension within Islam. Out of the initial conflict over the questions of succession to Muhammad and the role and function of the Successor, the Sunni-Shia conflict grew in theological and sociopolitical dimensions. The conflict has expressed itself repeated and in varyingly intense ways in Islamic culture and life to the present day. “The distinguishing features of Shiism in relation to Sunnism should be sought not only in its fundamental principles, but more importantly in its ethos, in the tone of historically developed attitudes which have informed and infused the Shia stance on controversial issues of Islamic history, society and forma. The actual disagreements between the Sunnis and Shias in certain details of theological and legal practices have not been as important as this ethos.” Originally, the Sunni-Shia dispute was not concerned with the fundamentals of religious practice or belief. Unlike Chrisitan debates, it has no relation to the nature of God, function of his messengers or manner of achieving salvation. It, rather, involves issues which are in fact, quite marginal to these sort of religious quandaries. “Over time, it has…
Shiite and Sunni Islam Ever since the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632 A.D. there has been a divide in the Islam religion. Many debated on who the rightful successor was, causing a rivalry. This rivalry has created two separate branches of Islam: the Sunnis and the Shiites. Of the 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, eighty-five to ninety percent of them are Sunnis. Sunnis believe that the rightful successor to Muhammad is Abu Bakr. Since none of Muhammad’s sons survived into adulthood,…
SHIA & SUNNI MUSLIMS. Sunni Islam and Shia Islam are the two major denominations of Islam. Their division traces back to a Sunni–Shiaschism following the death of the Islamic prophetMuhammad in the year 632AD. The dispute intensified greatly after the Battle of Karbala, in which Hussein ibn Ali and his household…
f. The organizational of Sunni Islam lacks real leadership structure. The leaders are simply ones who have spent more time educating themselves in the Islamic religion. They are called Mullahs or Priests. The role of this leader is to simply lead worship services and give religious guidance. Religious leaders are trained at Madrasas, a religious school that is adjacent to the Mosque. Most graduates go on to become leaders in the local mosque as well as primary school teachers. There are several…
his followers to teach others, both general knowledge, and the laws of Islam. One of the things he taught was quoted by Al-Bukhari as, “Do not nurse hatred towards one another, do not be jealous of one another, and become as fellow brothers.” After Muhammad’s death, there was a major split in Islam, creating two groups, the Shi’ites and the Sunnis. While we do not know for sure which group Muhammad would have supported, and who he wanted to lead Islam after his death, what we do know is that he…
“Accept the past without regrets, handle the present with confidence and face the future without fear”. The past, present and future of a person always determines what kind of individual they become. The political and historical events that existed in Afghanistan shaped every person living in the country. In The Kite Runner, Khalid Hosseini demonstrated how each character was shaped not only by their particular circumstance, but also by the historical and political events that occurred during…
The first steps of analysis focused on the descriptive statistics for each of the four conditions, which can be seen in Table 2. Between the two levels for religion, Sunni Islam (M = 4.34) was rated as more attractive than Methodist Christianity (M = 4.18), which did not support the initial hypothesis that Christianity would be deemed more attractive than Islam. Our hypothesis concerning tattoos held that the presence of tattoos would be rated relatively more attractive than the absence of…
the legal code of Islam. Sharia essentially comes from Mohammed’s teachings. Therefore, the development of Sharia began in 610 CE, when Mohammed began prophesizing about Allah. Over the next thousand or so years, as Islam spread throughout the world, Mohammed’s words were written down and interpreted. Over time the teachings and interpretations became official legal documents called the Quran and Sunna, which act similarly to the Torah and Gemara in Jewish tradition. In addition, different legal…
Introduction The factions of Islam among the Shi’ites and Sunnis involve different understandings of the Islamic succession. This paper will compare the Shi’ites and the Sunnis by exploring the differences and similarities between the two. Both factions of the Muslim faith have various perspectives that have molded the Islamic world. “This initial rift was compounded over the centuries by a recurring pattern of struggle within Islam between strains of militant puritanism and the less rigorous…
