Sunlight actually makes the skin tanner by stimulating the pituitary gland to secrete a hormone, produce melanin, which leads to the changing skin pigmentation. First, Sunlight triggers the pituitary gland to start secreting a hormone called Melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The pituitary gland is located close to the hypothalamus at the base of the brain. The pituitary gland is also connected to the optic nerve, which allows it to sense when the body is exposed to light. The pituitary gland is responsible for releasing several important hormones, such as the Melanocyte-stimulating hormone when sunlight is detected.
