Victoria Chen Mrs. Barsever Biology Honors/Period 4 3 March 2015 Sumatran Tigers: A Background Research Paper The Panthera tigris sumatrae, known by its common name, the Sumatran tiger, is the smallest of the remaining five tiger subspecies. It has lived for over a million years in the once extensive moist tropical jungles of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It has not yet been assessed for the IUCN Red List but its conservation status is listed as critically endangered. Their population in the wild has heavily diminished and is estimated to range between less than 400 to 500 remaining tigers. Their habitat ranges from lowland forest to mountain forest and includes evergreen, swamp and tropical rain forests. However, these tigers are found in the wild only in Sumatra. The part of Indonesia in which these animals live is characterized by its swamps, rivers, lowlands, and Montane and peat forests. These wet conditions are ideal for the Sumatran tiger, which is a good swimmer and can find and capture prey in water rather effectively. The habitat they are naturally found in also generally has very high precipitation and a temperature range from around…
The name’s Hades. I’m sure you’ve all heard about the horrible Hades who nearly destroyed your tiny land by letting angry gods run rampage. No? I’m the one with the fiery blue hair, shark-like teeth, and some would say “sickly yellow eye.” I’m the villain in the movie Hercules. Yep, there ya go! That’s me. Look, I know people don’t think I’m the most charming of fellas. My patience has always run as thin as a strand of hair. I’ll hear people blabbing above me on the streets how awful it was…
Did you know that the tiger, the largest of all cats, is on the top ten most endangered species in the entire world? Well, surprisingly it is. As of right now, there are less then 3,200 tigers left in the wild, which is sad because they are very unique animals, with many types of tigers, for instance Siberian tigers, Sumatran tigers, Bengal tigers, and Indochinese tigers. In my essay I’ll be going into detail with the Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, and the tigers Ron and Julie from the…
Southeast Asia is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse organisms, but it is also home to some of the most threatened species and tropical forests (Bateman 2010). The lush tropical habitats that once covered the area are rapidly decreasing and so are the organisms that thrive in that environment. The Panthera tigris sumatrae, more commonly known as the Sumatran Tiger, is the smallest surviving tiger subspecies left in the world (WWF 2017). Found only on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra,…

The Amur Leopard lives in the Russian Far East and can run up to thirty-seven miles per hour. Surprisingly, it can jump more than nineteen feet horizontally and ten feet vertically. Sadly there are only about sixty Amar Ontiveros 5 leopards left. In the early 1905’s there was about 4,000 South China Tigers and in 1996 there was about thirty to eighty left. Now they are believed to be extinct because they have not been seen for more than twenty-five years. In Sumatra there is a total of 400…
The Tigers Alive “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure.” ― Stephen King, Rita Hayworth and Shaw shank Redemption: A Story from Different Seasons The…
Research has stated that animals must be exposed and frequently involved in intense social interaction for facial recognition to occur. However, recent research has suggested that orangutans can differentiate between individuals with much less interaction required. The orangutans spend the majority of their time alone. It is estimated they spend 5% of their time associated in social situations. Additionally, very little is known about how the orangutans recognize faces in specific…
The tiger is the largest of the 37 species of cats in the world and unfortunately has recently become the most endangered of all the large wild cats. All tigers face two major threats. One is habitat destruction. This not only results in less territory for the cats to live in but also leaves the tigers' territory fragmented into separate islands making is hard for tigers to mate, which make it difficult for the species to survive. Conservation efforts are often aimed at creating sanctuaries,…
