    Domestication of pigs started many years ago. There are still wild pigs out there called the wild boar. Domesticated pigs now a days are on farms everywhere, some even living in the homes of people. A pig pretty much eats anything so they are a fairly easy animal to care for. Pigs come in all different breeds and sizes and colors. “Pigs are mammals with stocky bodies, small eyes, and flat snouts”(Bradford). The domestic pig is also known as the Sus Scrofa Domesticus or Sus Domesticus. Their kingdom is Animalia; class is Mammalia; order is Artiodactyla. Pigs are called commonly called swine or hogs. “The domestic pig originated from the Eurasian wild boar”(Giuffra). “Pigs are in the Suide family, including eight genera and 16 different species”(Bradford). Mitochondrial DNA was tested to come up with the origin to be made. Domestication of the pigs are thought to have happened first in the Near East. “For centuries the pigs have made a home with humans”(Nelson); basically domesticating themselves. Pigs were among the first mammal to be domesticated. Domestication of the pig is believed to have started around 6,000 years. Domesticated pigs rarely have a range map because of how populated they have become but at any given time on average there are “60 million pigs on farms throughout the U.S.”(Nelson).
