He traveled back home to spread the word of his discovery and he swore that everyone should know, but first he must survive and not get hunted by the dogs or the forest people. There are two conflicts throughout this story. One conflict is for the main character and the second is for the person who is reading this story. John’s conflict was with himself as he had to overcome his fear during his journey because the hill people told John that he is forbidden to go east, but on his journey he was given a sign to go east and so he was forced to make a choice. The conflict that the reader faces is that he must figure out and understand the surrounding/setting of the story. The author, Stephen Vincent Benét creates a feeling of curiosity and confusion throughout the story. Before setting out on his voyage he is told that he is forbidden to go east, however his curiosity got the best of him and he went east. On said journey to become a man he sees the great city that we know as New York City and as he walks through the city he sees a bunch of technology that is unknown to him. They seem similar to the devices they use, however it makes no sense to him how they work. In the story it states “There was a cooking-place but no wood, and though there was a machine to cook food, there was no place to put fire in it.” This shows confusion in his mind as to how it works without the wood they use.
