I passed one person. Then I passed another person. Eventually I had passed a good 10 or so people. I started to make the turn to break for the finish line when I noticed something odd; no one was ahead of me. I slowed down, then noticed that everyone was turning to run a second lap. I slowed down to a steady jog again. Although I was tired, I prepared myself to run another lap, and then sped up to a faster pace. In what seemed like only 30 seconds I was almost finished with the lap, and still…

into my life in 2011 and left in 2014. I understand that 3 years may only be a glimpse of time in our lives but those 3 years were abundant of friendship, success, tears and tragedy. In retrospect, he was the type of person who would laugh at my blonde moments and buy me sherbet lollipops as bribery to run laps around the oval. It was mid year in 2011 when I saw him, tall and thin with sparse hair which he often covered with a cap, branded by his favorite sports team. No matter the weather, he…

Now it was time for the meet. It was the normal routine, warmed up, stretched and got ready to run as fast as I can. I practiced handing off the baton since I was the second person to run out of us four in the relay. As soon as I knew it, I was on the starting line ready to run. The gun went off and our first runner, Ian started running. The first race was only 100 meters long so it would only be 11 seconds until the gun goes off until I get the baton handed to me. After the 11 seconds passed…

On a daily basis, I am asked why I run. When people think of running, they think of absolute pain and distress. However, when I think of running, I think of freedom and strength. Running gives a sense of relief from the stresses of daily life; whenever I have a difficult day, jogging along trails and dirt roads instantly rids of the strain of the day. You feel free because your legs can venture wherever you may desire. After you run, there is a sense of achievement that fills your body with…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to…

“They can’t stop what they can’t catch” This very Nike quote explains where my love for running began. This story is about me winning my first Track race. The day started well going through my classes as usually just as commonly as I do. During lunch I was thinking all about what I was going to eat; healthy or not-healthy. I also had to think about hydration and how much I wanted to eat. My nerves would always tense whenever someone mentioned the meet later today. Then came the ninth period-…
