    Dr. Seuss’s life started out like many others of his time. He was born Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel on May 2, 1904 in the city of Springfield Massachusetts, which is where he would grow up. His father, Theodor Robert Geisel, was the son of a German immigrant and owned a brewery before prohibition. After losing his job at the brewery, Theodor Robert took a job as commissioner of parks in Springfield. Seuss’s mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel, was also the child of a German immigrant, but she worked as a home designer. Theodor had an older sister named Marnie, and a younger sister that died of pneumonia not long after her birth. While growing up in Springfield, Ted most enjoyed going to the zoo. These trips, as well as the general sights and sounds of Springfield, would later serve as inspiration for his writings. Seuss stayed in Springfield until he graduated from Springfield Central High School and left for college in 1921.…
