What You Should Know About Having Spinal Fusion Surgery If you've had an injury to your spine that's made it unstable or fractured, it's probably giving you a lot of pain. The pain occurs because portions of your spine move independently of each other and they can pinch nerves and tissues when they are out of alignment. Your doctor may suggest a spinal fusion to correct the problem and decrease your pain. Here's a quick overview of this medical procedure. Fusing Your Spine With A Bone Graft A spinal fusion involves grafting bone to the unstable parts of the spine to hold them in place and cause them to move as a single unit. The bone used for the graft may come from a bone bank or it can be taken from your hip bone. The doctor may even decide to use artificial bone. The bone is attached with a metal plate and screws to hold it in place while it fuses with your spine. Once your spine has healed, it will be held in proper alignment and be prevented from shifting in that area. The end result should be less pain as you go through your daily activities. How The Procedure Is Done…

    1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background Spinal fusion technique was introduced 70 years ago for the treatment of degenerative disc disease and chronic lower back pain [1]. Hibbs and Albee were two spine surgeons in 1911, who performed first spinal stabilization surgery [2, 3]. Forward displacement of a vertebral bone in sequence of normal alignment of vertebra is called Isthmic Spondylolisthesis-most commonly due to progressive vertebral body malalignment in the lumbar region of spine. Even in severe…

Spinal fusion is a serious surgery to think about. There are many things to think about like after having surgery you won’t be able to eat or drink for at least two to three days and you’ll be sleeping all the time. There’s going to be a lot of pain. You’ll be doing your normal activities differently. I was in middle school when I had spinal fusion. The day of the surgery I was nervous/ excited. It was awesome watching the nurses put the IVs in my arms and hands. Spinal fusion is a thing to…

intraspinal facet joint can directly cause thecal sac or nerve root compression. They are increasingly cited as a major source of spinal instability and mechanical back pain. In this case, we report a 51-year-old woman who has been treated conservatively for a unilateral synovial cyst for 15 months. She then presented with an acute exacerbation of lower back pain, neurogenic claudication and lower extremity weakness. Her magnetic resonance (MR) studies showed new onset of spondylolisthesis at…

Nuclear Fusion and the Remains of a Dead Star Throughout the history of Earth, multicellular organisms rely on one thing, the sun. And throughout the observable universe, there are million of stars out there just like our sun. These stars could be different however, with either more mass, volume, heat, etc. In our high school career, we learn a lot about astronomy, such as the order of the planets in our solar system. We also learn about gravity, rotation of planets, and how long it takes…

Objective-We are trying to figure out two things while doing this experiment. First thing is how strong is the radiation based on the distance from the source and if thickness of the material effects how much radiation gets through. Introduction-One thing to know about this experiment is Isotopes.Isotopes of an element are different versions with same number of neutrons but different number of neutrons. Also these isotopes can be unstable which means they decay overtime releasing radiation.…

X-Ray and Neutron Imaging In physics, radiation is described as the transmission or emission of energy in the form of particles such as electrons, neutrons, protons and alpha particles or waves through a medium such as space, air or through a material. Gamma radiation (γ) and electromagnetic radiation, such as x-rays, radio waves heat and visible light are all examples of radiation. One of the main modern physics discoveries was that each unit of a wavelength of any form of wave radiation will…

There are two main kinds of nuclear reactions, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. A nuclear reaction is when an element undergoes a change and becomes a new element. Nuclear fusion occurs when two elements “combine” and a new element is created. An equation for nuclear fusion would look like, 21H + 31H → 42He + 10n. (Nuclear Chemistry) The two Hydrogen atoms “combine” to become Helium, a new element. Nuclear Fission occurs when an large unstable element splits into smaller elements. An equation…

The Sun is an enormous, extraterrestrial body that is many times larger than Earth. Many scientists have referred to it as a massive nuclear reactor that burns numerous amounts of hydrogen; and just like an actual nuclear reactor, hydrogen is the essential fuel in nuclear fusion reactions. The hydrogen in these fusion reactions fuse together to form beryllium, helium, and lithium atoms. “The temperature on the surface of the Sun is approximately six thousand degrees Celsius. While at its core,…
