The Origin of the black church is powerful, elegant, disciplined, and full of fortitude. Not only that, African Americans fought for the creation and development of the black church with protest, dedication, and everything they had. My definition of church is you, rather your a child, an adult, or a minister yourself, the church is always in you. The desire for the black church came from the origination of the master’s church, which deferred in many families. Later after slavery came to an end…
Most who witnessed the sitting president of these United States, sing the spiritual hymn Amazing Grace at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, SC, during his eulogy of falling spiritual warrior Rev. Clemmenta Picknecly would probably agree that it was overwhelming. It appeared to stir a feeling of connectively to all who sang along. Including, it is surmised, those around the world that identified with the words, reason and necessity for such a song at that moment in time. How ironic to…
Mercer University was founded in 1833 in Penfield, Georgia. This school was founded by a group of prominent Baptists around the local area. The school itself was named after Jesse Mercer, another Baptist leader during this time and the first chair of the Mercer Board of Trustees. The school would start off small with only about 30 students for males only. As time went on, the school would grow larger and take on more students of the same white race of course. This all would change in 1963 after…
Cecil Robeck’s The Azusa Street Mission and Revival offers the response of on African American church to the social and religious segregation we learned from last weeks reading of Methodists and the Crucible of Race. As a licensed Nazarene pastor, I enjoyed that we were also given a reading that revealed the Holiness movement’s response to the dark times of segregation in our country. In The Azusa Street Mission and Revival Cecil Robeck’s explains that the worship practices of the black church…
As found in the 1963 “Love that Forgives” Sunday school lesson from the 16th Street Baptist Church, “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.” The idiosyncratic history of African Americans in the U.S. is marked by experiences of racism, oppression, inequality, and adversity. These problematic experiences are critical in understanding how intergroup forgiveness for a…
In a discussion about the paradigms of public education, Ken Burns addresses the controversial topic of cultural education. Public education is experiencing a time of confusion in helping children develop cultural identity so the new generation can continue to play an important role in globalization. This confusion causes an immediate reaction: continue to do what has been done in the past--instruct children to work hard, do well, and earn a college degree, then they will get a job. Many…
observed many children who have dropped out of college because they were not ready for the freedom of being on their own. I remember my next door neighbor only let her son attend a local community college. The other children attended colleges and universities far away from home, but he went to school nearby. The reason behind that is because his mom wanted to make sure her child was prepared for college mentally. She didn’t want her son to drop out because of parties, and not keeping up…
According to E. Allen and J. Seaman (2013) in 2013, 32 percent of college/university students were participating in one or more online courses. In an article “Revolution hits the universities” by T. Friedman (2013), he explains how MOOCs will revolutionize the method of education in the next few years. This will create an easy access/low cost method of delivering education to students around the world. With some of the best universities already offering courses thru this platform, soon we…
The Desire for “More” Derives from School In every classroom, there are an abundance of different students that attend school for several reasons. Some of those reasons may be to graduate and venture to college, to play sports in college, to get a brighter education, or just to receive their diploma at the end of one’s twelve year-period of struggle and chaos. Each person has a goal that is different than another’s, but there are some students who struggle with the question of why to stay in…
Hardwork. Dedication. No reward One of these doesn’t seem to connect with the others. If you are a working hard and dedicated to what you do, shouldn’t you receive a reward. That thought goes through the heads of college athletes, everyday. They live this story, putting in hard work and time into playing for their school, yet they receive nothing. All these athletes play for the organization known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association or the NCAA for short. The NCAA is a…
