The 27 Club When Kurt Cobain was found dead, his mother, Wendy O’Connor, said, “Now he’s gone and joined that stupid club. I told him not to join that stupid club.” The 27 Club is the name given to popular musicians who died at the age of 27, often resulting from drug or alcohol abuse, or violent factors such as suicide or homicide. The number of musicians who have died at this age have raised suspicions that premature deaths at this general age are unusually common. Although death is recurrent at all ages, “There is a statistical spike for musicians who die at 27,” writes Cobain and Hendrix biographer Charles R. Cross. However, though the sampled musicians faced an increased death rate in their 20s and 30s, there is no actual factor which puts them at risk specifically at the age of 27. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. Though the coincidence was noted by the public, it wasn’t until after Kurt Cobain’s death, roughly two and a half decades later, that the name “The 27 Club” caught on. After Amy Winehouse’s death in 2011 at the age of 27, there was a large amount of media attention devoted to the club once again. It was only even three years earlier that Winehouse expressed her fear of dying at that age. However, the myth eventually has to be called into question; are these young stars really at a high risk for being the age that they are? In a population of dead musicians spanning from 1950 to 2010,…

Blue October More and more the music I hear on the radio disappoints me. Shallow lyrics, unoriginal tunes, all around uninspiring! I get the feeling that the majority of musicians are manufactured, created solely for profit. Every once in a while I stumble across a musician or group that are true artists. One such group is Blue October. The first song I heard by Blue October was “Calling You”, which was featured in American Pie. I’ll admit this tune did not particularly gab my attention. It…

Kurt Cobain Ever wonder how Kurt Cobain died? Some may say that he killed himself but I say other wise. There is evidence to prove that he killed himself but there is also evidence to prove that he was murdered. Although some might try and argue to believe that Kurt Cobain killed himself, isn’t it weird that Dylan Carson bought the shotgun for Kurt Cobain, the shotgun was lying on his chest, and the suicide note he left did not match some of his handwriting. Firstly, Kurt Cobain killed…

alternative rock. Alternative rock is another example of a branch from the punk rock era. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana are examples of the alternative rock subgenre. The songs these groups performed were either emulating more than one genre of music (more commonly), or didn’t fit any rock genre at all.
