Several sports seasons were wrapping up in the Sioux Falls area on June 9. The Sioux Falls U-12, U-14, U-16 soccer teams did extraordinarily well in the state soccer tournament. The boys and girls of Sioux Falls brought home six titles (Hoffman 1C). On the road to the tournament, construction was done on I-90. The border between South Dakota and Minnesota was redone, and the crew began to lay concrete (“Construction Crews Prepare to Lay Concrete on I-90 to Minnesota Border” 1D). Also in…
religion was very confusing to her because she wasn’t ever sure which religion was right for her. She shared with me that she was born Catholic, baptized Episcopal, and confirmed Lutheran. I found it quite interesting how many different religious communities she was part of. When I asked her how her national/ethnic/racial identity helped her as a new immigrant, she simply replied “It didn’t.” After getting this response I then asked her to expand. She said that because it was the 1960’s…
Reservation is home to the Lakota Indians and is located in the black hills right under one of America’s most prestigious landmarks, Mount Rushmore. In the spring of 1868, a treaty with the Sioux tribes was signed known as The Treaty of Laramie. That monument today is one of the most visited monuments in the United States. Mount Rushmore is a staple of the United States. On it, it has the faces of four of the most important Presidents of the United States. According to the Sculptor Gutzon Borglum “The purpose of the memorial is to communicate the founding, expansion, preservation, and unification…
After six weeks of fighting with many casualties on both sides, the then governor of Minnesota, Henry Sibley led a final onslaught against the Dakota Indians. The Dakota warriors were subdued and captured; about three hundred and three Sioux warriors were tried and sentenced to murder for their involvement in the war. Out of the number, thirty-eight of the warriors were publicly executed on December 29, 1962; the rest was commuted to various life sentences by Abraham Lincoln, who was the…
Training and preparation are important aspects to a successful mission trip. Kurt Caddy was the leader of this mission trip and has lead many trips to Indian reservations and other places in the world. I think that his knowledge and experience were greatly appreciated and was helpful. I believe that I was properly trained and prepared for my trip to South Dakota. Kurt had the group read “Neither Wolf nor Dog,” which gave us a narrative of the interaction between the author, Kent Nerburn and his…
A company called Energy Transfer Partners wants to build a pipeline from North Dakota to Illinois to transport oil. They say that this is the safest way to carry oil. The pipeline would be near the Stand Rock Sioux tribe, and could negatively affect them. The Native Americans believe that the pipeline would destroy their land and contaminate their water source. Thousands of people have come to protest the building of this pipeline. Should the North Dakota pipelines be built near Native American…
