    Living Under Maya

illusion,” or of deceit, and that one should always refrain from living under maya. One of the core messages in Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is the idea of living under a veil of illusion and feeling empty and devoid once the veil is unleashed; this is represented in the pregnancy metaphors, the symbolism of George and Martha’s son, and in Albee’s satirizing of the American Dream. One of the ways in which the message of living under a veil of illusion is conveyed is through the pregnancy metaphors that are predominant throughout the text. This is seen when George tells Nick, “Martha doesn’t have hysterical pregnancies […] Martha doesn’t have pregnancies at all.” (Albee, 109). George is indirectly comparing their infertility as simply being Martha’s inability to have “hysterical pregnancies” or simply pregnancies in general. However, George never directly describes himself or Martha as being infertile. His inability to directly state what is fact manifests and even intensifies the maya with which they live in. Denying what is real, allows them to live with their illusionary son, and lets the couple hide from their harsh reality. In addition, to the hysterical pregnancy metaphor, there is also the “puff” and the puff being a metaphor for power. In George’s game of “Get the Guests”, George describes how Nick and Honey got married, “[t]he Mouse got all puffed up one day, and she went over to Blondie’s house, and she stuck out her puff,” she then says,…

Descartes’ Dream World Worry Descartes has a very important plan in mind for his Meditations on First Philosophy and part of this plan involves bringing everything we know into question and finding what it is that we can know about the world around us and about ourselves. He wants to do this in order to find a solid base of what we certainly know, so he can build up what we can know onto that certainty. In these meditations he brings to light some problems with knowing things that we perceive,…

Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’ presents the theory that every individual goes through a ‘cave’ in life, and eventually becomes enlightened. In the cave described by Plato, prisoners are powerless and chained to the wall. The prisoners are missing out on all the things happening behind them, like the fire and the puppets. What they can see and hear are shadows and echoes. When the prisoners tried to get out of the cave, they couldn’t face the real world; they had mistaken appearance for reality.…

1.5. Methodological Framework The key concepts through which technology and culture are understood will be established and defined as part of a contextual foundation. This will be accomplished by examining both concepts through the idea of conceptual narratives (progress, convenience, determinism and control), and to take a closer look at the ways in which technology is integrated and embedded in our culture. Technology as a concept will be evaluated through applying the four phases of the…
