After graduating, he joined the French Navy’s information service where he would take along his camera and film many ports and underwater animals. Unfortunately, in 1933 Cousteau was involved in a fatal car crash, which left the right side of his body paralyzed. His right arm became infected and doctors wanted to amputate it but he refused. Instead, Cousteau took on daily swimming in the Mediterranean to get rid of the infection and rehabilitate his arm. Shortly after, a friend gave him a pair of goggles which lead to his underwater adventures. In 1937, he married Simone Melchior, and had two sons, Jean-Micheal and Phillipe. Simone died in 1990, so he remarried Francine Triplet whom he had another son and a daughter. When World War II began Cousteau and his family went to a small town near the Swiss border and secretly continued to do underwater experiments until 1943 when he met a French engineer who he developed the first Aqua-Lung with. The Aqua-Lung allowed divers to stay underwater for a longer period. After this invention, he joined the French Resistance movement where he was a spy, which he earned many medals, including the Legion of Honor from France. In 1950, Cousteau took a British minesweeper and converted it into a research vessel that he named Calypso. He used “Calypso” for his adventures, but after a while he had…
