In Sui Sin Far’s The Story of Once White Woman Whom Married A Chinese, there was a clear distinction between the characteristics of Minnie’s ex-husband, James Carson, and her new husband, Liu Kanghi. James Carson was a well-educated American man that was well versed in the problems of the human condition, including woman’s suffrage, labor politics and socialism. Despite his intellectual persona, he was also a deep-seated, emotionally abusive man who treated his wife with callousness and disrespect by insulting her intelligence and ambition, ignoring her attempts to communicate with him and despite the fact that the couple was still married and were raising their daughter together, he even sought out the companionship of another woman. An instance of James’ multiple insults was when he commented; “If you had ambition of the right sort you would have perfected yourself in your stenography so that you could have taken cases in court. There’s a little fortune in that business” (Far, 3). Instead of encouraging Minnie to continue to improve upon her talents as a stenographer and appreciating her for earning enough of an income to support his desires to write a book even when it was not completely necessary, he just discourages her. There came a point in her marriage to James when the emotional abuse had reached a point when she wished that he would just hit her, “He was neither a drinking nor an abusive man; but he could say such cruel and cutting things that I would a hundred…

The concept of Newspeak frightens me the most. I consider Newspeak the most frightening of all the technological advancements in 1984 because the vocabulary gets smaller each year (52). I value vocabulary because words are a way to express yourself which I often take for granted, but find very useful. Words are the most effective way to express what I think or feel and if vocabulary shrinks then I wouldn’t be able to express myself which is why I find Newspeak frightening. The limitations…
