    How Submarines Work

    • 481 Words
    • 2 Pages

How do submarines work? It depends on what their power source, engine, and hull is made out of. The difference in how they work could also lead into what their purpose is. There are many things that make a Submarine work like their engine, power source, weapons, and hull plating; they all rise and submerge essentially the same way. How do subs rise and sink? It is done with something called the Archimedes Principle. To sink the sub has several different components that have to move. One of them is the Main vent. This is closed while the sub is on the surface. The vent closes when the sub begins to submerge. This allows the air to be let out of the Ballast Tank which fills up with water when the sub submerges. To allow water to flood the Ballast Tanks the flood ports allow the water to come in. Once all of the air has been let out of the tanks the main vent closes. To surface again the sub has a similar, but different process. Like the process to submerge the same components have to move or allow something in. In the process of surfacing air has to be put into the ballast tanks in order to make the sub lighter than the water. To do this the main vent must be closed. Then air is pumped into the ballast tanks from the pressurized compartment. This then pushes out the water that was in ballast tanks through the flood ports that originally allowed the water in. Subs may rise and submerge the same, but their purposes can be very different. There are many…
