The main objective of this lab was to collect 〖Co〗_2 gases that were given off by the Alka-Seltzer tablets and to identify experimental masses. The volume of gas was 724 liters, or 723.86 cm and the experimental mass was .0894 grams. A balance scale was used before and after the reaction to record the change in overall mass. First, using the scale, the flask, balloon, and Alka-Setlzer tablets were measured, 259.4 ±.05 Grams were found. What created the “〖Co〗_2 gases to be trapped” were the…
Thermodynamics of Cheetos Purpose: to analyze the caloric content of snack foods, by determining the calories of heat given off by a Cheeto, or other snack foods, as it burns. Procedure: The food sample (Cheeto) was placed on a food holder, and the initial combined mass of the food holder and the Cheeto was measured and recorded. Using a graduated cylinder, 50-100 milliliters (ml) of water was measured and added to an empty soda can that was cut in half and cleaned. The soda can was…
used. Both techniques use Gas Chromatography, which is separating mixtures based on their distribution between a stationary liquid phase and moving gas phase (Saferstein, 2011). The Headspace Technique was developed in the 1980’s to aid in explaining the odor compounds found in the air surrounding objects such as plants, flowers and food (Headspace technology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, n.d.) Headspace analysis is the investigation of the components present in the gas, which is found…
Variables Likely impact upon the investigation How the variable will be changed/measured/controlled Independent variable Mass of Baking Soda (grams) Changing the mass of baking soda will impact the volume of gas is produced. The higher the mass, the more gas will be produced, and vice-versa. This will happen as the results of the decomposition of baking soda will be directly proportional to the mass of the baking soda. The independent variable will be altered by changing the amount of baking…
Gas exchange affects all processes of the body because everything in the body requires the gas exchange process to occur. The following are the interrelated concepts with gas exchange according to Giddens (2017); acid-base balance, anxiety, perfusion, nutrition, mobility, and fatigue. Acid-Base Balance is affected in a variety of different ways by gas exchange. For example, with chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD it causes respiratory acidosis which is essentially an increase in…
distillation, to pure octane. The distillation could be completed because part of the solution, hexane, had a lower boiling point than the other, octane, allowing it to evaporate out. Throughout the experiment, four samples were taken and tested by gas chromatography. Gas Chromatography, or GC, was used to analysis the components of each fraction taken during the experiment. Upon looking at the data, the presence of hexane in the fractions decreased, whereas, the presence of octane increased.…
Unstable are for the most part carbon and hydrocarbon-based intensifies that are unpredictable (swing to gas at room temperature. Inaba and Cohen (2007) They incorporate such basic materials as gas and gas added substances, lamp oil , paint(especially metallic paints) , air dusters, acetones , finishes, nail shine remover, spot removers, pastes and plastic bonds, lighter liquid, and an assortment of pressurized canned products. These unpredictable solvents are fast acting since they are…
The goal of this experiment was to use chemistry to analyze an unknown compound and through testing its physical and chemical properties determine what unknown compound that was found in a landfill. This would benefit the Environmental Protection Agency because once they know what the substance was they could determine the best way to remove it from the landfill and if there were any potential safety hazards to beware of while handling the substance. This would prevent any accidents that may…
Hobbytown Rocket V.S. Chemistry Rocket Research Paper A Rocket is a projectile that can operate on it's own without oxygen by the combustion of it's contents. Rockets are particularly interesting because it has transported mankind where they have never been before. That is why this project is on Rocketry, but with small scale rockets. The purpose of this project is to see if a homemade Chemistry Rocket, fuel made of baking soda and vinegar, can equal the endurance and/or the height of a…
In this lab, two methods of distillation (simple and fractional) were utilized to separate a mixture of volatile compounds (cyclohexane and toluene). As a first observation of the results and data generated, looking specifically at the simple and fractional distillation curves, it seemed that the fractional curve obtained was not as expected. In fact, it was not very different from the simple distillation curve, having a gradual positive slope. This means that there was actually not a big…
