“The Lottery” is a short story written by Shirley Jackson in the month of June in 1948. The story is about an annual tradition, called the lottery, held in an anonymous small village. All of the villagers gather for the annual event and Mr. Summers conducts a quick roll call. Each one of the residents of the village draws a piece of paper from the black box. As this happens, the villagers start to talk with one another how some nearby villages have stopped following the tradition of the lottery. The oldest man in the village, Old Man Warner, scoffs at the idea of giving up the tradition of the lottery and says there has always been a lottery in the village they live. Finally, Bill Hutchinson, the head of his household, draws a paper with a black dot on it. A second lottery is held, this time with five slips of paper, one each for the members of Bill Hutchinson’s family. All of the members of the Hutchinson family took a paper from the black box. Bill Hutchinson’s wife Tessie then draws the paper with the black dot on it. Tessie then protests that the drawing wasn’t fair as her neighbors and other villagers start to begin stoning her to death (eNotes 1). Shirley Jackson utilizes theme, symbolism, and conflict to illustrate this short story she wrote. Theme is defined as the main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work, which may be stated directly or indirectly (literary devices notes). “The Lottery” uses theme to express the short story. One example of theme in this…

As a matter of fact, even her so called soulmate told her to be quiet during her last breath she took on earth. Due to this action, the story twists from being a regular story to an unexpected crime…
