prime example of a film that is a pastiche of various other films, while also serving as a cache of inspiration for future filmmakers. Such inspiration was needed at a time when the film industry had little direction because of the influence of big business and Wall Street along with the disintegration of the Motion Picture Production Code. In fact, Star Wars was one of the films that marked the beginning of a new era in film: the postmodern period. Even today, about forty years after the release of the first Star Wars film, Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope, Lucas’s work continues to have an impact on almost every aspect of filmmaking, including the editing and special effects, the connection between film and business, the emergence of sequels, popular themes, and the audience dynamic; these effects are evidenced by the films X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) and Guardians of the Galaxy (Gunn, 2014). One of the major ways that Lucas has impacted the film industry is through the way films are edited during the postmodern period. During the modern film period, films were much more self-reflexive; for example, Two for the Road is a 1967 film which shows the storyline of the relationship between a man and a woman. However, it contains many moments which highlight the editing, such as the quick transitions between one point in time to another. Lucas, on the other hand, reintroduced and popularized the use of production and editing mainly as a means to an end. Therefore, the…

Laura Mulvey’s piece, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, emerged during second wave feminism and the classic Hollywood Film era. Mulvey’s work has since received various criticisms (Torres Lecture 10) however, several of her ideas are still prevalent in films today –specifically male characters as active and female characters as passive (Mulvey). Mulvey theorizes, “pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto…

A Sequel usually doesn’t work in Bollywood and one should never go with high expectations, for it mostly disappoints. Tanu Weds Manu was a breezy rom-com about how two totally different individuals fall for each other and decide to get married in the end. A sequel of this movie could have gone astray for lack of a strong script, but director Anand L Rai proves that if he’s sure of the subject, the film will certainly be a crowd-puller - be it a sequel like Tanu Weds Manu Returns or a single…

It’s common practice for movie studios to greenlight sequels, even sequels to movies that few people particularly ask for. This is that grey area in Hollywood where box office success supersedes creativity - and as it pertains to Neighbors, which currently stands as Seth Rogen’s highest grossing film to date (live-action role, at least), it makes perfect sense for there to be a sequel. Right? The 2014 summer box office hit grossed $240 million against a miniscule $18 million production…
