    “Motivation refers to forces that energize, direct, and sustain a person’s efforts” (Bateman & Snell, 2013). Managers need to use motivation tactics everyday in order to achieve performance goals. Associates want to feel like they have a purpose at the company they are working for. If managers motivate everyday and focus on the positives more than the negatives a better work environment will be formed. This student has recently been feeling unmotivated at work. A new assistant manager has been brought into the department that this student works in and so far the attitude of that manager has not been positive. Although this manager is very knowledgeable and has been in his position for 8 years, he talks low of management in the company. He is very paranoid about the upper level management watching him. This affects how he treats this student as his associate. This student is striving to move up into management as soon as possible and sees upper management as leaders of inspiration. The assistant manager however has an opposite outlook on upper level management. He tries to down of the upper level because he does not see them as influential. The student has been motivated by previous managers and has had positive feedback on evaluations and performance. The assistant manager at times tries to talk this student out of moving up and becoming a manager.
