As a child, I lived with my mother who spoke to me in English, but every other weekend when I went to my father’s house, he would try to get me to speak in Spanish. My dad would speak to me in Spanish and only respond to me if I responded in Spanish. I use to hate this method as a child, but as I got older I realized how important it was for my father to do that. Now, I am appreciative that I am bilingual. I should be speaking more Spanish, but I guess my mother not speaking to me in Spanish…
Going into this class my thoughts of what an ELL was before reading Coehlo (2004) and Li, Myles, & Robinson (2012) was someone who had immigrated to Canada and English was not their first language. It is probably a common assumption among the majority of the population even though it is a wrong one. I also only viewed an ELL as someone who is initially learning the language, but as talked about in the lesson, the learning never really stops. I never would have viewed an individual who is a…
Bias #1, Page 171: “However, a CI can enable strong spoken language only when used with intensive auditory- oral exposure in extended, salient, and child-initiated interactions.6 Without a full linguistic and auditory experience, the effects of deafness- associated deprivation can derail the spoken language learning process before it begins.” (Mellon, N. K.) Author Nancy Mellon is currently the executive director at a non-profit agency providing several services for children who are deaf and…
poem in a sestina pattern, however giving her own spin off to it by incorporating Spanish words. In order for the message to be understood, Julia Alvarez places the audience in her shoes in order to recognize the difficulty of having English as a second language. Although most of the poem is English, there are a couple of Spanish words. This leaves the audience to feel lost or as if she is not getting the full message. Ironically that is how many bilingual people may feel when they are still…
Bilingualism is seen as being able to interact and connect with two different cultures. The development of Bilingualism begins at very young age, it become a form of identity among children and it creates this way of life that they consider normal. Being bilingual in America is knowing two different languages in most cases, Spanish and English. It is learning Spanish from their most likely uneducated parents and learning English from their surroundings along with perfecting the language through…
comprehensible input, affective, cognitive, and meta-cognitive strategies from the student. We must also validate the student’s culture and support their language for a minimum of 5 years. “An additive bilingual situation is where the addition of a second language and culture is unlikely to replace or displace the first language and culture” (Baker, 2001, pg. 58). Additive bilingual programs purpose is to educate the child…

Although it is true that there are downsides to being a bilingual child, the effect can in fact be made less severe. Bilingual children are more likely to develop a stutter, but a study conducted by Howell, Davis, and Williams suggests that “if a child uses a language other than English in the home, deferring the time when they learn English reduces the chance of starting to stutter and aids the chances of recovery later in childhood.” They added that “school performance was not affected with…
Muhammad Ali, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, and Bella Thorne are all great athletes, inventors, and actors/actress but did you know all of them has/had dyslexia? (“Famous”). Caitlyn Jenner describes dyslexia this way “The biggest problem with dyslexic kids is not the perceptual problem. It is their perception of themselves. That was my biggest problem” (“Alternative”). Just because someone has dyslexia doesn’t mean they are different from anyone else it just means…
When I was five years old I taught myself how to read and write in Spanish. Although I live in a Hispanic family I was not aware of how to read and write in Spanish. My mom’s side of the family is from Puerto Rico, and my dad’s side of the family is from Ecuador. I was always spoken to in Spanish by my family except for my mom. We spoke in English, so I never learned how to read or write in Spanish. This is when I taught myself how to. It was the day I taught my self how to interpret…
