Tilyou along with many other businessmen began buying up Coney Island properties with the intention of transforming the reputation of the seaside resort and thus began the new era of Coney Island and created the image Americans hold on to today. In 1890 Coney Island was still fairly expensive to get to and was out of reach of many New Yorkers. But with the new Coney Island, increased methods of transportation including ferries, trolleys, elevated trains and horsecars opened Coney Island up to nearly everyone. The new affordable Coney Island was almost instantly a hit with Americans flocking to the area by the millions. Better mass communication with newspapers, magazines, postcards and such share the delights of the seaside haven adding to its lure. It was a place where people could relax and not worry about the stress of everyday society. Picture of people on the beach hoisting one another up on their shoulders and women pulling up their skirts flowed throughout America and people liked what they saw. Cox explained in his book, The Feast of Fools (1969), “Coney Island signaled the rise of a new mass culture no longer deferential to genteel tastes and values, which demanded a dramatic resort of its own.
