something I was not accustomed to seeing, snow. The white shined bright against the cool grey of the mountain as the rays of the sun reflected off the snow. The trees created a sea of green as we head towards the NOLS ranch. The expedition was going to be through NOLS, an organization focused on outer leadership. It had not set in yet that I was about to embark on a sea kayaking expedition for three weeks, nor did I realize the impact the trip would have on me. The instructors were absurd if they thought we were ready to kayak on our second day in the field. Before we could start, we first needed to experience capsizing. Being in the water always left me at ease ever sense I almost drowned 6 years ago. The taste of salty water was still engrained in my brain along with the sense of helplessness, as I tried frantically moving my arms, my desire to live controlling my body. As we floated towards an instructor I asked my partner for her name, thinking a conversation would get my mind off the situation. We then…

Inner Boston Harbor's Thompson Island is a gem of an easy access spot if you're looking for fishing the flats for striped bass or deeper and structured-waters on the same plus bluefish. Access is good: kayak fishermen can use the little-more-than-a-mile-from-the-island hand-carry at City Point, ditto the ramp at Malibu Beach, Neponset for powerboaters with trailers with four-wheel drive. In addition to flats fishing on the island's back side, Thompson holds within its contours two tidal…

set of clothes back in the cabin. We put life jackets on because we were required to wear them because some people don’t know how to swim. I have never been kayaking and I and the fear almost crippled me like a bird with clipped wings. I didn 't even know what I was supposed to do with the paddle, I was so clueless. I didn’t want to do any of it but all of my classmates were doing it and my teacher was so I would look like a scary cat not not doing the activity. I chose to go on the kayaking…

Hey everyone. It's Badger. Rafter is out for a bit thanks to a project for a public speaking class, so I'm kind of the only one who's free to post for the moment. So here's my post: Once again, I've noticed my random paddling crews giving me odd looks for asking to sit in an strangely specific section of the raft: left-hand tube near the stern of the raft, usually at the last thwart in the back. People who don't know me seem to assume that I'm sitting there because it's the safest. It's…

When the lifeguard's face grew a bright mischievous smile I knew what was next. "Now you have to capsize, flip your kayak over, and get back in." For some reason that seemed frightening at first I don't know why, the water is warmer than yesterday and it's not raining. Maybe it was the thought of not knowing what's beneath me. Whatever the reason it made me hesitant along with everyone else. Out of nowhere the daredevil side of me that allows me to ride the awesome roller coasters makes me…

The wind was blowing, my attention jumping from my map to steering the canoe. I was certain I was leading the right way. Or was I? I felt conflicting emotions; according to my map, I was on course, however my team seemed to think otherwise. I felt like I lost control. Did they make the right choice of electing me the leader? It was July of 2016, I woke to the melodious symphony of birds singing their morning greeting. The fresh scent of cedar trees wafted from the forest on a gentle breeze. I…

Ultimately, no one won the race because the wind became too strong and everyone had to retreat back to the docks where we began. Operation Pegasus Inferno is agreed upon by my friends to be the most enjoyable game played during Camp Edwards. The game had two large teams consisting of a mix of campers and counselors. One team started in kayaks out in the lake while the opposite team…

My mom and I decided that we wanted to try it out too, but little did we know what an amazing time we would have. My mom and I got up very early in the morning and headed off to a large nearby lake that we had seen when driving past. Thankfully, we had decided to put the kayaks on the car the night before, because otherwise it would have been quite difficult since it was still pitch black out when we left. On the way, there was a lot of fog and it was hard to see. It had taken us several days…
