(00:03:59-00:04:02). In addition, the Black culture focused more on their form, “From Africa and the jazz from New Orleans,” (00:04:02-00:04:05). However, a few years after WWI Paul Whiteman who was the king of White dance bands, created an organized band known as Smooth Big Band— which consisted of jazz elements and classical music. According to the documentary, Paul Whiteman was the reason for how Swing started in 1924 when he instructed George Gershwin to write “Rhapsody in Blue”, “The first…
start out the same way and go in a similar order every time, but there are always surprises that come along the way during these days. As the day starts on a competition Saturday, the Worthington Kilbourne Marching Band arrives normally in the late morning or early afternoon. The band room opens an hour before report time so that all the instruments can be shined and polished to look impressive on the field. The color guard, my section, is normally found in the dressing room getting makeup and…
For my concert report I attended the Mile High Jazz Festival presented by Flesher Hinton Co. on February 16, 2017. The event took place in Macky Auditorium at the University of Colorado Boulder at 7:30 pm. The concert consisted of a student ensemble and then after a short intermission a faculty ensemble. I decided for this report to select the most impactful song from each ensemble and write about their musical components. The student ensemble consisted of: a piano, a bass, drums, a guitar, 4…
On April 21st, 2017, I went to the concert hold by Nocturne- a two years old club in Denver, and the Keith Oxman Quartet did a remarkable concert that night. The Keith Oxman Quartet is a Jazz band lead by Keith Oxman on tenor saxophone, and has Derek Banach on trumpet, Todd Reid on drums, and Jeff Jenkins on organ. Additionally, Jenkins was playing keyboard on April 21st. The Keith Oxman Quartet plays at Nocturne every Friday night between March 10th and April 28th. On last Friday evening, the…
He slid his hat further down his face as he slunk down the ledge, closer to the door. He stepped lightly, wincing as his heel clicked. If he made too much noise they would investigate. And when the crew discovered he lacked a pass, he'd be gone. He cracked the door open and slipped inside. The room, as he'd hoped, was full of large boxes, all cargo being delivered. He snuck around, finally settling behind a taller stack. He sat down, not realizing how cold and tired he was until the weight came…
Steven E. Ambrose. Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle Nest, New York: Simon and Schuster, 2001. Band of Brothers is an exceptionally written well -documented account of the soldier’s personal experiences as they battle across Europe during World War II. The book documented the victories, daily struggles and deplorable conditions endured through first-hand accounts of the Easy Company from basic training in July 1942 until the unit was…
Tribal communities, in the Amazon Basin, are rooted in tradition. These traditions may seem very foreign to Western cultures, but these tribal societies are now changing rapidly to defend the place they call home through use of technology and languages familiar to our culture. The advancement attempts made the the communities may not be enough; specific communities have been forced to take aggressive measures. The Amazon Basin and its forests are said to be in danger from ventures such as…
Introduction Quantum dots (Q-Dots) is very small semiconductor particles that means it can be either conductors or resist electricity depending on the temperature and purity of the semiconductor. Q-dots range in size from 2-10 nm, so because of their small size, quantum mechanics governs the physics of the particles. The synthesis Q-Dots were first studied in 1982 by Efros and Ekimov, and then many developments have reported the synthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles.1 Q-Dots have unique…
In Roll With It: Brass Bands in the Streets of New Orleans, Matt Sakakeeny explores how New Orleans is very different from the other stereotypical American city as he writes about it as “utilize voices and instruments as technologies for producing subjectivity, identity, and culture” (p.6). Sakakeeny also uses fieldwork to learn about and explain different power-related processes, such as personal and professional mobility, which will be discussed in greater detail. Because Sakakeeny’s approach…
Domingas Fernandes Evaluation #3 On Wednesday night March 30th, I opened my Blackboard page and noticed that I had a notification from my Virtual Group. My group members had already started the discussion about what Electronic Meeting System we would be using for the assignment. GoogleDoc, being the most widely used, was suggested and everyone seemed to agree with it. We also shared our phone numbers and decided to use iMessage. On the following day, it seemed that everybody forgot that we…
