I plopped down in my cold, hard chair in the far back corner of the art room just as the minute bell chimed, signaling the last class of the week would begin in 60 seconds. Standing in groups scattered near the crooked rows of black tables, my classmates excitedly chattered away about plans for the weekend. Since I was one of the few freshmen in this Introduction to 2-D Art class, I did not join in the conversation. Instead, I stuffed my hands into the pocket of my favorite purple sweatshirt and anxiously waited for the class to commence so I could get it over with and begin my weekend. To pass the idle time, I focused my attention to the front of the room. I noticed jugs of paint containing every color of the rainbow. Next to the rainbow of paints were stacks of white paper. Thus, I deduced we were going to start a project that day. A minute later, our black-bearded art teacher Mr. Smith trudged into the room with his usual plaid dress shirt struggling to contain his protruding belly. Beneath his Santa Claus stomach were his customary khakis, complete with paint splotches. I always thought Mr. Smith resembled a walrus. All he was missing was the flippers and the tusks. Tapping my worn gray Converse sneaker on the floor, I glanced around to realize I was the only one who noticed the walrus’s entrance. Everyone else was still crowded in their miniature herds babbling away. They dispersed, however, after Mr. Smith moseyed up to the front of the room and announced in his booming…

HAMMER OR SCALPEL Hammer or Scalpel: How to Fight the Historical Evils of Hammer & Sickle, and Swastika In cogently, comprehensively comparing Orwell’s insightful novella to Niemoller’s equally incisive poem, the able academic analyst can realistically conclude the former was powered heavily like a hammer and the latter holistically, even stylistically, like a skillful surgeon’s scalpel. Further, the targets rest differentially as well, with Orwell attacking the burgeoning bedrock of communism…

interesting and made me view different situations from someone else’s perspective. With all the books and stories we were responsible for this class, I connected to three wonderful stories for two particular reasons. As a young doctor, and doctor in general, there will be times when you develop a strong attachment towards a patient that may affect you mentally or a patient comes in with symptoms that are not recognizable. Through the dissection of the rat, my lab partner and I were able to gain a better understanding of the animal’s anatomy by viewing it’s external organs, as well, after careful incisions, viewing the inside of the rat’s anatomy. The rat is a typical mammal, with a head, clearly defined neck, trunk and tail. As such, the rat has two unique aspects that distinguish mammals from other vertebrates: an external covering of hair and mammary glands. As a vertebrate mammal, much of the rat’s structural…
