recently to the old country is because they had a right, like anybody else, to visit the Paris Exposition.” At the conclusion of the trial, Bresci is sentenced to imprisonment for life at the Penitentiary of Santo Stefano. Mrs. Bresci claimed that she would rather see her husband dead than imprisoned for life. Her statement is as followed, “My poor Gaetano. He has been tried, convicted, and sentenced in one day… They tell me that in Italy, when one man kills another, the longest term of imprisonment that can be given is five years. Because my husband killed the King they send him to prison for life. It is a funny country where they have one law for one man and another for another man… If it had been any one but the King, my husband would be free in five years.” The statement by Mrs. Bresci is a bit confusing. She seems to support her husband’s crime of killing the King of Italy. Although, ultimately wishing that he had killed a less-important man so he would be free in five years. Also, she is unable to distinguish between the crime that her husband committed and the crime that any other man commits; whether it be killing the King or another man. “Gaetano Bresci, the assassin of King Humbert, committed suicide on Tuesday at the penitentiary of Santo Stefano.” It appeared that Bresci was facing difficulties while in prison. “His violence last week culminated an attack on a jailer, in consequence he was placed in a straitjacket… later… the prisoner killed…

The Girl Who Won For most kids, growing up is pretty tough. For Julia Alvarez, it was even harder. The twisted paths of adolescence became blurred and incredibly confusing to Alvarez after she was, along with her family, forced to leave her native Dominican Republic for the strange United States. This culture shock was difficult to digest at the beginning, but then Alvarez became fueled by the bullies who taunted her accent and the missing pieces that being a “Dominican hyphen American” left in…

“I think that when I write, I write out of who I am and the questions I need to figure out” (How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents 169). “Chucha shakes me awake. Sunlight is streaming in through the jalousie windows. Before I can ask her what’s the matter, gangster men in their dark glasses storm into the room, thrusting their guns here and there in the corners of the closet and under my bed, in search of something they can not find.
