The historical setting the Kama Sutra was written in plays a large factor in the content and methods the text uses. The Kama Sutra, like most texts and artifacts from ancient India, does not have a specific date it was written. It is commonly accepted among the scholarly community, however, to have been written between 300 CE and 700 CE, in the 3rd century. During this time, the Gupta dynasty ruled over most of India, with the strongest influence in northern India. The rulers of the Gupta dynasty were a family line starting with Chandragupta I, followed by his son Samudragupta, and lastly his grandson Chandragupta II. Of these three, the grandson, Chandragupta II, was by far the most influential leader, reigning from 380 CE – 415 CE. He created an atmosphere that led to what is known today as the Golden Age. During the Golden Age, there were extensive developments in fields such as science, math, art, literature, religion, and philosophy. These advances laid the foundation the Kama Sutra to be written, paved the way for the establishment of Hinduism as it is known today. A foundational aspect of Hinduism can be seen in the Kama Sutra.
