then proceeds to show her how to get to the other tribe. Rowlandson very rarely shows gratitude or appreciation towards any kindness given to her throughout her captivity. At time she acknowledges certain individuals (when they seem to be of great service to her) but more often than not, she does not reciprocate any of the good shown to her. Throughout her captivity, Rowlandson is also free to keep any profits that she earns from the items she makes for other Native Americans in the tribe. In certain instances, she works on the Sabbath (the only day of the week that Puritans were to abstain from work and fully devote to prayer) “They came home on a Sabbath day, and the Powaw that kneeled upon the Deer-skin, came home (I may say without any abuse) as black as the Devil. When my Master came home, he came to me and bid me make a shirt for his Papoos of a Hollandlaced Pillowbeer” (30). If Rowlandson were indeed a ‘model Christian’, working during the Sabbath would be completely out of the question, and instead, on more than one occasion, she works for profit on those days. At the closing of her narrative, Rowlandson makes the statement “And I hope I can say in some measure, as David did, ‘It is good for me that I have been afflicted’[Psalm 119:71]”(41). The Puritans in colonial America tended to believe that any affliction brought onto them by God was meant to test them in some way. Whereas Rowlandson may have believed that she emerged more devote than ever, the evidence…

Puritan villages would not traditionally be seen as a place to normally don a black veil, as described in lines 4-6 of The Minister’s Black Veil. “Spruce bachelors looked sidelong at the pretty maidens, and fancied that the Sabbath sunshine made them prettier than on weekdays.” The town seems upbeat and bright, accepting and loving, certainly not a place for one to normally wear something so dark and mysterious. Though it may be accepted during funerals and sad events, a black veil would be…

However; the…

Jesus included many messages throughout his ministry about healing the sick. He often connected miracles of healing to forgiveness of sins or other lessons to teach the people around him. In this, he healed many people, such as those with blindness, leprosy, and deformations. Many looked down upon this, believing that Jesus was sinning by healing on the Sabbath or that he should not perform these miracles. However, these healings taught many lessons to those who witnessed them and those who read…

making the wrong decisions and getting punished for their wrong doings. When something went wrong in a Puritan’s life they believed that the Devil was trying to ruin them or that God was angry with them. Since God was the center of their everyday lives he was everything to them. They were constantly worried about everything that was going on that they never really focused on anything good in life unless it was praising God and the things he was doing good in their lives. Each Sunday every…

six days and rested on the seventh, He asks us to work for six days and rest on the seventh. He has set aside this day for us to reflect on His word and to give glory to Him. Even before the Ten Commandments were given to the people of Israel, God had signified that the seventh day was Holy. For example, in the dessert God would have the people grab twice as much manna on the sixth day because he would not provide them with any on the seventh. God showed the people how important the Sabbath…
