An example that helps to illustrate how hermeneutical injustice works would be the case of black women and their hypersexualization. As hermeneutical injustices has its roots in being something that is perpetuated on a structural level, it must be acknowledged that due to years of perpetration, the idea that women of color, particularly black women, can only be perceived as sexual beings. The practice of oversexualizing black women has existed for centuries. One of the key figures associated with this, was Saartjie Baartman, aka the Hottentot Venus. She was a woman of African descent, who found herself objectified and shamed due to the fact that she had large buttocks and genitalia. As time went on, Baartman would be used to define the line separating what was considered deviant and normal sexuality (Harris-Perry 57). Due to this, women of color would often find themselves the subject of excessive brutality and exploitation. This becomes an issue rooted in hermeneutical injustice, if you look at the correlation of black women to domestic violence and rape. Due to this history of structural racism, these black women find themselves at an epistemic disadvantage in that they lack the knowledge to put into words the experiences they faced, and as a result we see the always increasing stats of domestic abuse and rape in communities with high…
