    adventures. In 1937, he married Simone Melchior, and had two sons, Jean-Micheal and Phillipe. Simone died in 1990, so he remarried Francine Triplet whom he had another son and a daughter. When World War II began Cousteau and his family went to a small town near the Swiss border and secretly continued to do underwater experiments until 1943 when he met a French engineer who he developed the first Aqua-Lung with. The Aqua-Lung allowed divers to stay underwater for a longer period. After this invention, he joined the French Resistance movement where he was a spy, which he earned many medals, including the Legion of Honor from France. In 1950, Cousteau took a British minesweeper and converted it into a research vessel that he named Calypso. He used “Calypso” for his adventures, but after a while he had trouble finding money to found his voyages. To earn some money to continue his voyages he published The Silent World which later was made into a winning film. He also made an ABC television show named, “The World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau” which ran for nine seasons. In 1973, Cousteau founded the Cousteau Society which helped raise awareness for the animals and sea life underwater. This lead to him also helping stop the dumping of nuclear waste. He continued to raise awareness and money through his television shows and his society.
