In Cassandra Clare’s novel series The Mortal Instruments and other related series, there are many references to other religions mythologies. The main question that is asked refers to the number of mythologies that she uses without the readers realizing it until her books are re-read or researched further. Before things get too out of hand, I believe that we should go into the history of the Nephilim and their relatable mythology with other cultures. One of the most common angels mentioned in Clare’s novels in Nephilim’s history and mythology is one of the angels, Raziel. The angel Raziel is known in the Jewish Kabbalistic tradition for when he gave Adam a book of wisdom. In the Mortal Instruments series, the Gray Book would be the Book of Wisdom in the Jewish mythology. The second item Raziel gave to the Nephilim is the Mortal Cup; the Mortal Cup could be represented as the Holy Grail in the Catholic mythology. After the rise of Nephilim, it was thought to be traced back to the witch trials. The witch trials resulted in a bunch of crazy mundanes (normal humans) killing off innocent civilians; however, the Nephilim had little involvement during the trials. The Nephilim believed the mundanes’ approach during these trials resulted in a way to protect themselves against demons without their aid. The biggest hunt the Nephilim was involved in was hunting for werewolves in Central Europe, in the 1600s, when it was considered a sport. Eventually, the Nephilim authorities called the…

those literacies affected me in the same way that my third language did. At 15 years old, I became obsessed with the Japanese language. I remember picking up a self-teaching book at Chapters and devouring it chapter by chapter, and the more I knew, the more I craved to know more. However, it was never my plan to learn to write in Japanese. I found their writing system beautiful, to be sure; but not to the point of dedicating myself to learning over two thousand characters spanning over three…

In the poem, “ Totally like whatever, you know,” author Taylor Mali says, “ In case hadn’t noticed, it has somehow become uncool to sound like…

out at once, not fully emphasising each letter. Once Jace got past that point in the alphabet he was running out of air in his little lungs, so he went slower and took pauses in between letters. I took this as an opportunity, I asked Jace to sing them again but to slow down in the beginning and take his time on MNOP. The letters and sounds blurred together. He did awesome the second time around! We high fived and got excited. I asked follow up questions on his name to assess his phonemic…

“There are six fundamental components that constitute a comprehensive “diet” for early literacy learning and instruction(Invernizzi, 2002): 1. Oral language, concepts, and vocabulary 2. Phonological awareness 3. Alphabet knowledge (PA) 4. Letter-sound knowledge 5. Concepts about print(CAP) 6. Concept of word in text(COW-T)”(Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, & Johnston, 1996, 100).When creating the lesson I considered these six different components and tried to make them part of my lesson.
