“The Metamorphosis” and the Christmas song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” demonstrates that outsiders are those with unique qualities that cannot contribute back to their community as opposed to those who are misjudged or misunderstood. In “The Metamorphosis”, traveling salesman Gregor Samsa awakens one morning to discover that his body has been transformed into one of a “monstrous verminous bug (137)”. Gregor and his family soon discover that his new cumbersome body has rendered him incapable of working, so the family members find jobs to help alleviate their financial situation. Though they were originally willing to accommodate Gregor by removing the furniture from their living room in order for him to crawl around, Gregor’s family members begin to feel negative sentiments towards him. Near the conclusion of the story, Grete announces that “things cannot go on any longer” and demands that her family “must try and get rid of [Gregor] (174)”. She explains that the family has “tried what is humanly possible to take care of it and…

However endearing the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is, it is a story that blatantly captures a moment in time of palpable prejudices and inequality. Written by Montgomery Ward department store to sell appliances in 1939, it is a testament to what conditions were socially accepted as normal during that time period. Released as a movie in 1964, this story has an explicit lens of bigotry, inequality, and the importance of conforming to society. From the beginning of the movie with the…

The singalong songs, really bring the audience and the band together, and it's a really cool feeling when they are in sync. One song, was rudolph the red nosed reindeer, where it was either a trumpet with a mute, or a horn, was extremely overpowering sound, and not a great one at that. I'm inclined to think it was a trumpet due to the in general “blat” or blaring of the noise, and the distortion it receives when playing at higher volumes. The symphony also played a piece called sarajevo, which…

felt different than the rest. (In a total good way.) Maybe it's because I’m an 8th grader this year, and I know the rest of the 8th graders in this class so that way we’re able to participate in all the inside jokes we have as a band. Maybe it’s because I had a great honor to announce that the band was going to Disneyland. Or maybe it was because I’ve gotten to know our amazing conductor and teacher for a solid two school years, in which this would be my last. No matter what the reason, this…
