SACRIFICE AND SELFLESSNESS “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” -Joseph Campell A legitimate hero freely has the will to give the ultimate sacrifice of their own life for the lives of others or a greater cause. United States Army soldier Ross Andrew McGinnis shows the world just how much of a hero he sincerely is while serving in Iraq. McGinnis is on patrol in a humvee with 3 fellow soldiers. Out of nowhere, a grenade soars into the Humvee and the men freeze like statues realizing this might be their last moment on earth . McGinnis notices how all four of soldiers inside will not escape to safety in time. He leaps onto the grenade covering it completely with his body, taking the full impact of the deadly explosion. During McGinnis’s funeral, his father confesses how he“ had the opportunity to escape,” yet still points out how his son purposely “chose not to.” On December 4th 2006, McGinnis gave is his life in order to save fellow soldiers and greater cause of winning the war in Iraq. Marvin Gaye says, “Don't punish me with brutality. Talk to me. So you can see. What's going on.” I chose this line because it really speaks to me. As an Indian American, there is…
