This may symbolize the respect that the two men had. They are carrying big staffs or horns. These may be used to to control the people /animals that are under them. The temple may have been used for religious or sacrificial purposes. THere looks to be an altar on the inside that could have been used to sacrifice to the gods to keep them happy.
