    Charles Lane Analysis

Charles Lane, in his weekly column from the The Washington Post, consistently uses facts and figure, a concerned tone, and a cause and effect expository mode in order to convey his argument about a current issue. However, he uses varying levels of sophistication in the three articles “The GOP’s health-care plan goes in the exact wrong direction,” “Who is to blame for the opioid epidemic,” and “Rahm Emanuel gears up for a modern day- Brown v. Board.” Lane supports each of his arguments with ample quantitative facts and figures. In his March 22nd column on the misdirection of the GOP’s proposed healthcare plan, he uses relevant statistics about who uses medicare. To support his claim that there is little to be gained by linking Medicaid with employment, he asserts that “The vast majority of Medicaid beneficiaries —77 percent in 2015...— are in households with a worker already” (“The GOP’s”). This statistic makes it clear that such action would help only minimally in making Medicaid more cost effective. In his March 29th article, in which he identifies the entities responsible for the opioid epidemic, he illustrates how widespread the issue is using statistics. He claims that between 1999 and 2015, “183,000 deaths [were] related to prescription opioid overdoses” (“Who is to blame”). This quote is placed near the beginning of the opinion editorial; it sets up the argument by identifying why this is an important issue. In his April 5th article, about a modern court case regarding…

drum of the motor, and you could smell the pungent odor of gasoline being burned. We had been gliding and bouncing over the dark murkey water for what felt like an eternity before I asked to my grandfather, “Are we there yet.” He replied with a firm “no, but we are getting close.” After that is starting to look out over the water, which the sun had been reflecting its rays of off it, and making it glisten like glitter. For about maybe 10 minutes later the boat lurched to halt in the water…

    1. Dyer is literally doing what his title expresses and is attempting to defend disco from those who accuse it as a capitalist form of music. He also lists the positive aspects of disco, not only the music but also the culture surrounding it. Through the ‘debunking’ of capitalism and almost humanizing and describing the characteristics of disco that relate it to other forms of music, including those that oppose the nature of disco, and to human experience, including queer movements, he makes his…

Catching My First Fish Have you ever caught a salmon? If you have then you know then they put up a fight. This is how I caught my first salmon. It was a cool afternoon and I was about 9 years old, I was casting an orange spinner, under the bridge at Black River. I was getting tired of fishing because I haven’t caught anything all day. I was slowly reeling in the lure back up to the bank of the river. I had a hit! I tried to set the hook, but I didn’t set the hook in time. I sighed and then…

Everyone might have a difference of opinion but they know what they are talking about and have the experience to back it up.
